Students of Manipur University on Monday staged a protest demonstration in front of the vice-chancellor’s office decrying the failure to conduct elections for Manipur University Students Union (MUSU) 2023-24 academic session.
Various placards condemning MU authorities for failing to conduct the MUSU election and respect the rights of the university students were held during the student protests.
As such, the protesters demanded swift conduct of MUSU 2023-24 elections and removal of the incumbent VC all the while chanting ‘No MUSU No MU’ slogan.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the protest, MU student Moirangthem Dhanabir stated that the failure of MU authorities to conduct the elections on time was an infringement of student rights.
“This has posed serious problems in resolving student grievances. But the authorities have not initiated any actions regarding the matter even though the election schedule for 2023-24 academic session has passed,” he said.
He highlighted that the MU deputy registrar had notified about the formation of the election committee on May 24 but added that no follow up actions had been initiated.
In the latest report, a new notification from MU deputy registrar on Monday scrapped the previous order and withdrew the election committee with immediate effect following the resignation of the four committee members.
As such, he demanded MU authorities to conduct the elections so that the grievances of the students could be raised properly.
He cautioned that further delay in action would result in more intense agitations from the university students.
