Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday expressed his concern on the lack of clear directions or policies for moving forward to ensure the overall and holistic approach to improving the education sector. He, however, said that his government had identified the systematic problems and had made substantial investments much higher compared to the previous years in education.
Sangma said this while inaugurating the new building of the College of Teacher Education (CTE) at Rongkhon in Tura. The inauguration program was also attended by the Chief Adviser, Thomas A Sangma, officials from the education department and the district administration.
Speaking at the inaugural function, the chief minister said that in the last four and half years our education system and overall economic situation improved in the state but education has been a big challenging sector as a whole and the Govt. has prioritized education since 2018.
The Chief Adviser to the Chief Minister, Thomas A Sangma, while speaking on the occasion said that the world of education is changing rapidly for which we need quality infrastructures to keep pace with.
The Director of DERT, John P Lakiang, while speaking on the occasion, highlighted the roles and responsibilities of a teacher and informed that this Govt. has laid a lot of emphasis on youth.
The Principal of CTE, Rongkhon, Dr Meena A Sangma, in her speech informed that in this state-of-the-art building, there are 119 classrooms, separate rooms for teaching faculties, etc. and said that this CTE is one of the best institutions in the state. While highlighting the needs of the institution, she informed that 90 posts of teaching faculty need to be created and filled up.
The Additional Director of Higher and Technical Education, A Ali Nagi, while delivering the welcome address, informed the gathering that this new building have been constructed at a cost of Rs. 18 crores funded by the Asian Development Bank’s Supporting Human Capital Development in Meghalaya and said that this institution will fulfil the need for B.Ed and M.Ed courses as per the NCTE norms and standards.
