Manipur University hosts national conference on media's impact

The Manipur University on Wednesday hosted a one-day national conference shedding light on the significant role of media within the socio-political fabric, particularly focusing on the region's context.

The workshop, spearheaded by the department of Mass Communication, served as a platform for academia and scholars to delve into the intricate dynamics of media influence amid contemporary societal transformations.

Addressing the inaugural function, MU vice-chancellor professor N Lokendra articulated the timeliness and relevance of the chosen theme.

Reflecting on the past 11 months, he emphasised the profound impact of media narratives on public opinion, not only within Manipur but also resonating across national and global corridors.

Drawing parallels with international developments, the vice-chancellor highlighted the interconnectedness of Manipur's socio-political landscape with broader regional dynamics, particularly in neighboring Myanmar.

He highlighted the transformative power wielded by technologically advanced media platforms, reshaping public discourse and influencing policy formulations both locally and at the national level.

Echoing sentiments from renowned scholars, Lokendra emphasised the need for critical inquiry into the symbiotic relationship between technological advancements and human psychology, as envisioned by pioneering thinkers in the 1970s.

Recognising the pivotal role of the media in filtering public opinion, the vice-chancellor expressed optimism for fruitful exchanges and collaborative efforts towards advancing socio-political discourse.

The programme also witnessed the presence of MU’s School of Social Science dean professor Th Purnima; former vice-chancellor of Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication Prof BK Kuthiala and MU’s department of Mass Communication head RK Lilapati as presidium members.
