Manipur Technical University gets Intellectual Property Rights Cell

Minister Thongam Biswajit, speaking at the opening of the IPR cell at MTU, called for exploring more on getting GI tag and patent for the products of the state.

An Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Cell was opened on Thursday at Manipur Technical University under the initiative of Patent Information Centre (PIC), Manipur Science and Technology Council.

According to a press release issued by the university, the cell was opened to work as a linkage between the PIC, Manipur and institutions/university and affiliated colleges, guide the researchers on the basics of IPR, encourage faculty members to carry out patent searches, facilitate clearance from competent authority for filing patent applications among others.

The release said that Minister Thongam Biswajit, in his address during opening of the cell, called for exploring more on getting GI tag and patent for the products of the state.

It further stated that education minister Th. Basanta Kumar encouraged the students to make headway in the field of research and make exemplary contributions like many Manipuris working abroad.

After the IPR cell was opened, a one-day workshop on IPR chaired by vice chancellor of the university, Bhabeswar Tongram was also held. Resource persons spoke on ‘Harnessing Intellectual Property in Technical Institutions’, ‘Patenting System in India and Abroad’, it added.
