Reacting to student bodies’ clarion call to make education a disturbance free zone, students of Manipur University took out a demonstration at MU main gate on Wednesday.

During the protests, the students demanded those concerned to make education a disturbance and stress free zone, to make it compulsory for educational institutes to conduct at least 220 classes annually, to stop politicising educational institutes and to stop the unbearable demands of armed groups on educational institutions.

Speaking to media on the sidelines of the protest, ex-finance secretary of Manipur University Students Union Kshetrimayum Oken stated that the unknown armed groups had imposed insurmountable demands on the teaching and non-teaching staff of the university.

“The groups have gone overboard; even calling out the professors by disrupting the classes. Therefore the administration and examination block of the university are unable to function properly,” he said.

He expressed concern that such actions could potentially hinder the development of the education sector in Manipur. As such, he appealed to all concerned not to indulge in such activities in future.

“We respect and honour the sacrifices of those who have come out to protect the territorial integrity of Manipur but at the same time, such love and devotion should also be reflected in educational institutes,” he said.
