Director Arts and Culture Lourembam Kishworjit Singh on Sunday expressed that the time has come to refine the present contemporary Manipuri culture, while raising concerns that it is actually deteriorating though the people take pride that Manipuri Culture is identifying the state in the international arena.
Kishworjit was speaking as chief guest at the one-day seminar on ‘Contemporary Manipuri Culture and Nationalism’ held at Manipur Press Club, majorkhul, Imphal. The programme was organised by the Ethno Heritage Council (HERICOUN), Manipur.
Kishworjit said the present form of Manipuri culture is witnessing a deterioration as compared to the past. The present culture needs to be refined in order that the rich culture of Manipur is preserved, he maintained. He said that discussions on certain aspects of each community towards Manipuri culture are needed. Moreover, the contributions made by the youths towards the present culture also need to be discussed, he added.
He maintained that similar seminars need to be organised frequently so that further discussions may be held to establish how the contemporary Manipur culture can be defined.
HERICOUN president Longjam Ratankumar expressed in the seminar that the scenario of the past and present Manipuri culture will be discussed. In the past, the Manipuri culture gave much influence to nationalism and helped maintain economic power, he said.
The seminar also discussed whether the contemporary Manipuri culture influences nationalism, he added.
President of Women’s Association For Socio-Economic Development RK Tharaksana also attended the function as guest of honour.
