The inmates who are being quarantined at Waikhom Mani Girls College Thoubal, held protests on Sunday morning and vandalised several college properties including the college gate.
The centre is an institutional quarantine centre reportedly being opened under district administration Thoubal. Altogether, 32 inmates are being quarantined there and they were demanding to be discharged for home quarantine. Earlier on June 1, the same inmates protested and damaged college properties.
As per sources, all of the 32 inmates returned from Delhi on May 18 and had been quarantined there from the day of arrival. Their quarantine period was extended as five inmates from the centre became positive. As another inmate tested positive on Sunday, the inmates were against further extension of the quarantine period out of fear. So, they attempted to flee from the centre, leading to the unfortunate incident of protest, sources added.
The police and medical staff who are being posted there faced difficulty in controlling the situation. Soon, more police forces arrived at the spot and controlled the agitation.
It is said that out of 32 inmates residing there, only 12 are from Thoubal district while the remaining ones are from other districts. There is also an unconfirmed report that they returned from Delhi by any means.
Following the situation, the deputy commissioner Thoubal had allowed all the 32 inmates to be discharged after taking the permission from relevant authorities.
