Moreh police restrict cross-border movement of vendors as COVID-19 cases rise in Myanmar's Tamu

The Moreh police and KSO checked vendors at Morning market and sent back the Myanmar vendors who crossed the border. They also informed them about the suspension of FMR and the district magistrate’s order which banned cross-border movement from February 1.

With the sudden surge of Covid cases in Myanmar’s Tamu district and in pursuance of the suspension of Free Movement Regime (FMR) in Tamu-Moreh border, the Moreh police have started sending back Myanmar nationals who crossed the border to sell goods at Moreh town.

The drive on Monday was led by additional SP (Law and Order) Sukumar and officer in charge, Moreh Police Station Anand. The police team was assisted by Kuki Students’ Organization (KSO) Moreh.

The Moreh police and KSO checked vendors at Morning market and sent back the Myanmar vendors who crossed the border. They also informed them about the suspension of FMR and the district magistrate’s order which banned cross-border movement from February 1.

It may be mentioned that over 200 positive cases had been detected so far in Tamu township of Myanmar which is bordering with Moreh town in Tengnoupal district of Manipur. As many as 48 samples had been tested positive for the Omicron variant.

As a precautionary measure, under the initiative of chief medical officer Tengnoupal, Dr N Gojen, random Covid testing is being conducted in the Moreh town area.  On the same day, a total of 10 Covid positive cases were found out of 333 samples testing.

Following the detection of Covid positive cases from Myanmar nationals at Moreh town, the chief medical officer had written a letter to DC Tengnoupal for the closure of the border between India and Myanmar.

On January 28, under the initiative of DC Tengnoupal Mannuamching along with the chief medical officer and doctors from the district, conducted a random Covid testing at Moreh Morning bazaar, during which Covid Positive cases were detected.

Following the increasing numbers of Covid positive cases, DC Tengnoupal issued an order on Sunday for the restriction of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) between India and Myanmar from February 1 to 7. With the enforcement of the order, Moreh police on Monday sent back Myanmarese vendors from Moreh town.

On Saturday, the Moreh police team led by additional SP (Law and Order) Sukumar, ZEO Tengnoupal and KSO Moreh visited schools in Moreh town.

The team met the school heads and informed them about the risks and possibilities of transmission of the virus. The team appealed to the school heads to adhere to the order issued by the government.

As per the government order, physical classes are permitted only for Class 9-12. The order further instructed schools to strictly adhere to Covid SOPs.
