India continues to witness surge in single-day COVID-19 deaths

India on Wednesday reported 1,733 more COVID-19 deaths and the death toll rose to 4,97,975, as per the latest updates.

India continued to report a surge in single-day COVID-19 deaths as 1,733 more patients died of the disease, taking the death toll to 4,97,975, according to the latest updates by the Union Health Ministry.

Kerala reported the highest number of single-day deaths of 1,205, pushing its death toll to 55,600 so far, the second highest numbers of COVID-19 deaths among all states and Union territories in the country.

Maharashtra has the highest number of COVID-19 deaths - 1,42,705. However, the state has been witnessing a significant drop in the number of daily deaths. A total of 94 Covid-19 deaths were reported in the state on Tuesday-Wednesday.

The country’s single-day COVID-19 caseload remained below two lakh with 1,61,386 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. With it, the country’s COVID-19 active caseload presently is 16,21,603.

The active cases constituted 3.90 per cent of the country's total positive cases, which is 4,16,30,885 as of Wednesday.

Kerala's COVID-19 active caseload of 3,68,580 remained the highest among all states and Union territories in the country so far. Today, the state has 60,77,556 COVID-19 confirmed cases. 

As per the latest updates, 2,81,109 patients have recovered in the last 24 hours and the cumulative tally of recovered patients (since the beginning of the pandemic) is now at 3,95,11,307.

Consequently, India’s recovery rate stands at 94.91 per cent.

The testing capacity across the country continues to be expanded. The last 24 hours saw a total of 17,42,793 tests being conducted. India has so far conducted over 73.24 Cr (73,24,39,986) cumulative tests.

While the testing capacity has been enhanced across the country, the Weekly Positivity Rate in the country currently is 14.15 per cent and the daily positivity rate is reported to be 9.26 per cent.

With the administration of more than 57 lakh doses (57,42,659) vaccine doses in the last 24 hours, India’s COVID-19 vaccination coverage has exceeded 167.29 Cr (1,67,29,42,707) as per provisional reports till 7 am on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the ministry stated that more than 164.89crore (1,64,89,60,315) vaccine doses have been provided to States/UTs so far through Govt of India (free of cost channel) and through direct state procurement category. More than 11.48 Cr (11,48,99,956)balance and unutilized COVID Vaccine doses are still available with the States/UTs to be administered.
