Amid the sudden spike of COVID-19 cases in India, the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has called for an enhanced surveillance of COVID-19 protocol at airports in the country.
In an advisory sent to all airports on Tuesday, the DGCA called for imposing spot fines on violators of COVID-19 norms in the airport premises.
The DGCA said it had come to its notice that compliance of COVID-19 safety protocols in some airports was not satisfactory.
Urging all airport operators to ensure compliance of COVID-19 safety measures, including wearing of face masks properly- covering nose and mouth, physical distancing etc., within the airport premises, the Central agency said punitive action, such as levying of spot fines in accordance with the law should be explored with the local police to serve as a deterrent for violations.
