Five states contribute 60 per cent of the total cases in India with Maharashtra at the top followed by Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh, the Health and Family Welfare Ministry said on Monday.
The nationwide tally on Monday surged to 42,04,613, while the death toll rose to 71,642 with 1,016 deaths being reported in a span of 24 hours, according to the ministry’s 8 am data
Of the total nationwide cases, Maharashtra contributes 21.6 per cent while Andhra Pradesh makes up 11.8 per cent, Tamil Nadu 11 per cent, Karnataka 9.5 per cent and Uttar Pradesh 6.3 per cent.
Maharashtra also contributed 26.76 per cent of the active cases in the country, followed by Andhra Pradesh at 11.30 per cent, Karnataka 11.25 per cent, Uttar Pradesh 6.98 per cent and Tamil Nadu 5.83 per cent. These five states currently contribute 62 per cent of the total active cases in the country, the ministry stated in a release.
The total number of recoveries stands more than 32.5 lakh (32,50,429) as of Monday.
In the last 24 hours, Andhra Pradesh recorded the highest recoveries with 11,915 newly recovered cases. Karnataka and Maharashtra saw 9575 and 7826 recoveries while Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh witnesses 5820 and 4779 new recoveries, respectively. These five states together contributed 57 per cent of the recoveries in the last 24 hours.
