Mass tree plantation at Manipur's Langol Reserve Forest

Continuing the observance of the 75th Van Mahotsav 2024, the Central Forest Division conducted a mass tree plantation drive on Monday at Langol Reserve Forest, Mantripukhri.

Approximately 1,000 seedlings were planted during the drive by Forest Department officials, staff and around 80 NCC cadets of 14 Battalion (Imphal), under the overall guidance of Divisional Forest Officer Ganesh N stated a release. Major Rajkumar of NCC, Range Forest Officer, Sadar East, M Jobid Meitei and BO Koirengei Beat were also present at the programme, it mentioned.

Speaking at the event, the Divisional Forest Officer emphasized the critical importance of conservation and afforestation efforts for preservation of forests and the environment at large, it stated. Highlighting forests as the lifeline of the planet, crucial for ecological balance, biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation, the officer underscored the urgent need for proactive conservation measures, it stated.

The measures include preventing deforestation, combating illegal logging and promoting sustainable land-use practices, he maintained. He further stressed the importance of afforestation to restore degraded lands, enhance carbon sequestration, create wildlife habitats, and bolster local economies through sustainable forestry, it mentioned.

He urged the NCC cadets to not only support these efforts but also to lead an example in fostering a lifestyle that respects and nurtures the environment, it added. He made key recommendations including reducing waste, conserving water and energy, advocating for sustainable practices, supporting local initiatives, and promoting environmental education, it noted.

The DFO also appealed to the cadets to embrace their roles as future leaders by taking proactive steps towards conservation and afforestation, emphasizing that their actions today will shape the world of tomorrow, the release stated.

It further briefed Van Mahotsav, renowned as the ‘Festival of Forests’, celebrated this year under the theme ‘Ek Paudha Maa Kee Naam’ (A Plant in the Name of Mother). The event garnered significant participation from NCC Cadets, reflecting a growing dedication to environmental conservation and green initiatives, it stated.

Various saplings including Heikru, Usoi, Wang, tolhao and uyung were planted during the drive with an aim to promote biodiversity and encourage the cultivation of native species, it mentioned.
