Despite repeated appeals to the government, which has been allegedly met with indifference, the community has taken matters into their own hands.

President of Eco Network, Sinthangamba Laishram, lamented the lack of government action, stating that the river, which serves as the primary water source for the local population, has become a dumping ground for domestic waste due to the absence of proper waste management systems.

He said the dire situation has sparked concerns among the community, particularly regarding the safety of the water for drinking and other essential purposes.

In response to the garbage issue, he outlined plans for the establishment of a dumping site in Heirok and emphasised the importance of recycling.

He urged the local populace to refrain from disposing of garbage along the riverbank.

The initiative aims to not only clean up the river but also raise awareness about the importance of environmental conservation among the community members, he added.
