After a hiatus of nearly a year due to the prevailing crisis, Manipur on Friday witnessed Shumang Leela, a unique traditional art form of the state, with the performance of the play “Mutlaroidaba Machu” by the Peace Maker Artists’ Association.

The event was part of the observance of the 24th Shumang Leela Day at the Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen in Imphal East.

Shumang Leela, a popular entertainment event in Manipur, had been restricted from performing since the eruption of violence on May 3, 2023.

The prolonged hiatus had a significant impact on the livelihoods of the artists associated with this traditional art form. Many artists were forced to shift professions for their survival.

Arun, a Shumang Leela actor, highlighted the dire situation faced by the artists, revealing that there are around 12 to 13 dol (groups) of Shumang Leela performing teams, each consisting of approximately 17 members.

He expressed concern that due to the long break, many artists had started to forget their acting skills and had resorted to manual labor for their livelihood. Furthermore, many artists had been compelled to sell their instruments, he added.

Drawing attention to the plight of the Shumang Leela artists, Arun urged the government to take immediate measures to ensure their livelihoods and preserve the unique art of Shumang Leela.

In addition to the performance, the Iboyaima Shumang Leela Award 2024 was presented to B Jugolchandra Sharma, an artist, director, and writer in the Shumang Leela community. The event also felicitated veteran Shumang Leela artists for their contributions to the art form.

The programme was graced by the presence of Commissioner of Arts and Culture, M Joy, President of MSSLC, M Purnimashi Leima, Director of Tourism, W Ibohal, and President of Manipur State Cooperative Union, M Tompishak Singh.
