‘Mangang’ (Hari Shayan), one of the oldest art forms of Manipur, exists in a vulnerable situation and such art forms need to be promoted and preserved, said Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee, and advisor of Kongpal Nupi Ishei Marup Leimapokpam Lakpati Singh on Wednesday.
Lakhpati was speaking as the chief guest during the annual production of ‘Mangang’ and Basak ‘Utkantha’ at Pebam Mandap Kongpal Chanam Leikai, Imphal East.
He said these art forms used to be performed in Manipur during the time of Rath Yatra ‘Kang’ festival. The performance of these art forms is becoming less frequent in the present day. He further appreciated Kongpal Nupi Ishei Marup, Imphal for promoting the art form of ‘Mangang’ and Basak ‘Utkantha’ by delivering their performance every year at an annual function.
Retired officer of Manipur State Kala Academy L Surendra as guest of honour of the function said the Kongpal Nupi Ishei Marup, Imphal has been putting efforts to promote these art forms for years.
For Hindus in the state, ‘Mangang’ was an important art form in the olden days. To preserve and promote the art form, a workshop was organised and the production was being organised, he added.
Chairman of Ranganiketan, ISCKON, Manipur Ajit Das; and Laiphamlakpa of Shri Shri Govindajii Temple Board K Kunjo Singh also attended the function as president and guest of honour respectively.
