The 84th birth anniversary of the legendary theatre director, Padmashri Wareppa Naba, was commemorated on Wednesday at his residence in Haobam Marak Thingel Ngangom Leikai, Imphal.
The event was organised by his family members in collaboration with Theatre Mirror, Imphal.
The commemoration began with a floral tribute to the late Padmashri Wareppa Naba, followed by a two-minute silence in honor of those who have lost their lives in the ongoing conflicts with Kuki militants.
The attendees spoke highly of Naba Wareppa’s immense contributions to Manipuri theatre, particularly Shumang Leela.
Born and raised in Haobam Marak Thingel Ngangom Leikai, Wareppa Naba was awarded the prestigious Padmashri in 2017 for his outstanding contribution to the development and promotion of Shumang Kumhei and theatre culture.
During his prolific career, he directed over 60 Shumang Leela plays and authored more than 20 original works.
He also served as the director of the theatre group ‘Theatre Mirror’ and held key positions, including Chairman of the Manipur State Shumang Leela Council and President of Theatre Centre, Manipur.
Naba Wareppa was a recipient of several national and state awards throughout his lifetime, leaving an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of Manipur.
The programme witnessed the presence of renowned theatre director Lamabam Gojen as the chief guest, principal of the School of Seidamkol Wareppam Ongbi Tarunbala as president and film director and social activist Ningthouja Lancha as the guest of honor, besides other prominent figures from the theatre and film industries.
