Tokyo Olympic silver medalist weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu on Friday presented an amount of Rs 5 lakh to the coffer of Manipur Weightlifting Association (MWA) for being the beacon of her weightlifting journey.
The amount was handed over to MWA general secretary Sunil Elangbam and working president Lokendro Singh by Mirabai's mother Saikhom Tombi Leima at a solemn function held at the meeting hall of MOA, Khuman Lampak.
Acknowledging the fine gesture from the weightlifter S Mirabai Chanu, Sunil Elangbam said, it was indeed a proud and rare moment for the Weightlifting fraternity that they were able to reap the fruit of their long journey.
He said that this contribution from S Mirabai Chanu was so special because it had come from her hard work, that too from an excellent performance in the mega platform of Olympic Games. “We are deeply honoured by this gesture and may she attain further glory in her future,” he added.
He further said, “We will consult with S Mirabai Chanu on how she wishes to invest the said amount, if any, towards the development and also to enhance more weightlifters for the future.”
It can be mentioned that S Mirabai Chanu had earlier let known her intentions to repay something back for MWA during her reception.
Hockey starwarts Sh Nilakanta Sharma and Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam also committed to help out their clubs.
