Fix agricultural products' prices based on production cost: BKS-MP
BKS-MP general secretary Telem Dara said that though agriculture is the backbone of the state's economy, many farmers face various difficulties in carrying out their agricultural activities due to lack of basic needs.
The Bharat Kishan Sangh Manipur Prant (BKS-MP) demanded the state government to ensure remunerative price to farmers for their agricultural produce on cost basis.
In a press conference held at Manipur Press Club in Imphal on Tuesday, BKS-MP general secretary Telem Dara said that though agriculture is the backbone of the state's economy, many farmers face various difficulties in carrying out their agricultural activities due to lack of basic needs. As such, acknowledging their sufferings, the state government should fix prices of agricultural products based on cost of production.
The BKS-MP is all set to submit a memorandum in this regard to the Prime Minister through district commissioner of Imphal East on September 8, he added.
Dara further said that most of the farmers in the state are tenants and due to this reason, they could not enjoy benefits of the schemes launched by the government. The state government should consider this issue at the earliest and chart out some welfare schemes for the tenant farmers.
He continued that concerning the issue of urea that occurs every year, it is high time the government finally solve it for the long term. Until and unless the state government addresses the farmers’ issue, the state would never achieve the mission of doubling farmers' income by 2022, he added.
The state government should solve all the issues within 10 days, otherwise various democratic forms of agitations will be taken up, he warned.
