Government approves revival of NERAMAC to boost income of farmers in Northeast India

NERAMAC was set up to be the “torch bearer" for farmers and potential entrepreneurs in the region.

The Union government has approved the revival of the North-Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing project - NERAMAC boost the income of farmers in the North-eastern region and help address their plight.

"With a vision to boost income of farmers in the North-eastern region, Government approves revival of NERAMAC worth Rs. 77 crore," the Manipur government tweeted.

NERAMAC was set up under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) with the objective of bringing about a revolution in the existing agricultural marketing system of the region.

The Union Cabinet gave its approval for the revival of NERAMAC on August 18. 

Pointing out that processing of food products of the region is prevalent at primary level only and in view of the need of secondary and tertiary processing of agricultural commodities, NERAMAC was set up to be the “torch bearer for the potential entrepreneurs helping them get exposure about the advanced processing technologies and the farmers by providing them with appropriate market linkages as well as remunerative prices for their produces”.

Hence, the following aims of NERAMAC:

1. The farmers’ welfare scheme aims to ensure remunerative price to farmers of NE region

2. GI tagging and marketing of organic farm products of Northeast India.

3. Promote products of nE farmers globally and generate employment in the region.
