Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Thursday paid tributes to the Father of Indian Space Programme, Padma Vibhushan Dr Vikram Sarabhai on his birth anniversary and said that his vision and distinct achievements had made India one of the leading nations in space science.
"My humble tributes to the great scientist, Padma Vibhushan Dr.Vikram Sarabhai on his birth anniversary. Fondly remembered as the Father of the Indian Space Programme, his vision and distinct achievements had made India one of the leading nations in space science," Biren said in a Twitter post on Thursday.
Dr Vikram Sarabhai was born on Agust 12, 1919. He started space research and helped develop nuclear power in India. He was honoured with Padma Bhushan in 1966 and the Padma Vibhushan (posthumously) in 1972. He passed away on December 30, 1971.
Several awards have been named after the great scientist. The Vikram Sarabhai Journalism award in Space Science Technology and Research is given to those journalists who have contributed to the fields of space science, applications, and research.
