People over 60 years of age, particularly widows and widowers, are suffering the most amid the COVID-19 pandemic in terms of financial and health issues, said Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee co-opted member Achoibam Deben on Sunday.
He was speaking during the distribution of pension to the people above 60 years, who failed to get the benefit of government’s pension in Lamlai assembly constituency. The distribution of pension has been organised every month in the name of his mother Achoibam ongbi Ibemhal.
Deben said the state government has been taking various initiatives prior to the COVID-19 vaccination, however, the government has failed to give pension benefit to the people who have no one to take care and are in need of proper financial assistance. The authority concerned should take necessary steps for them at the earliest.
He further said Lamlai Block Congress Committee has also been taking necessary measures for the people of Lamlai assembly constituency, who are suffering due to pandemic.
Deben distributed the monthly pension from his own pocket to a total of 420 beneficiaries from Lamlai, Challou, Napet, Pungdongbam and Uyungmakhong. An amount of Rs 200 each was given to persons of 60 years and above and Rs 400 each to the widows.
The programme was also attended by Lamlai Municipal Corporation councillor and members of Lamlai Kendra Development Political Forum and Lamlai Block Congress Committee.
