The Women Action for Development (WAD) has strongly condemned the incidents of alleged sexual assault on minor girls in Moreh and Imphal West. It appealed to the authority concerned to convict the culprits at the earliest and release the interim compensation for the victims.

The WAD appealed to the District Child Protection Units (DCPUs) and Child Welfare Committees (CWCs) and the department of Social Welfare to release the interim compensation as inundated in POCSO, Act 2012 for the victims so as to ensure proper medical attention and other requirements.

A release signed by WAD secretary, M Sobita stated that in connection with the alleged sexual abuse of the minor girls at Moreh and Nagamapal, Imphal West, Moreh police arrested one M Touthan of Moreh Ward No 2 and Imphal police arrested Rupesh Kumar Singh for commissioning of such heinous crime against the minor girls.

WAD appreciated the action of both the police personnel of Moreh Police Station and Imphal Police Station for arresting the culprits without further delay, it added.

“At the same time we also appreciate the doctors for providing medical assistance to the victims at this critical juncture of COVID-19 pandemic and also for reporting the matter to the concerned police stations by providing the necessary evidences to take legal action against the culprits,” stated WAD in the release.

It is also important to remind the DCPUs and CWCs to provide multiple counseling to both the victims and their family members until justice is served, the WAD said, appealing to the concerned courts to convict the culprits at the earliest.
