Lanva River which once served as a lifeline for Churachandpur by providing drinking water has been hugely encroached upon.
Village Authority of Gangpimual and Dorcas Veng under Churachandpur district on Saturday announced that quarrying of sand and stone at the Lanva river shall be strictly prohibited with immediate effect.
A joint meeting was held on Friday and deliberated on the dwindling deposits of sand and stone at Lanva river, which passes through their village, threatening its very existence and erosion of its adjacent and nearby homesteads, stated a joint release.
The meeting resolved to pass prohibitory orders in public interest that quarrying of sand and stone at the Lanva river shall be strictly prohibited with immediate effect, any person or vehicle trespassing the prohibition shall be fined Rs 5,000 on every count of violation.
The landowners adjacent to the river providing passage and thoroughfare for quarrying shall also be fined Rs 2,000 on every count of violation, the meeting resolved.
The Lanva river which once served as a lifeline for Churachandpur by providing drinking water has been hugely encroached upon, and many people started making their livelihood by quarrying sand and stones. Their activity has led to flooding on many occasions in the past during heavy rainfall.
The district administration had also issued orders prohibiting the quarrying of stones and sands, for which the police are also doing their parts but to no avail. Therefore, the sealing of the passage by the said two village authorities have become the last option.
