AMSU demands capital punishment for alleged rapist

AMSU has been mounting pressure on the government to frame an ‘Anti-rape Law’ to check increasing sexual harassment and assault against women, AMSU Thoubal District Committee woman affairs secretary Puyam Malemnganbi said.

AMSU Thoubal District Committee on Monday demanded capital punishment for alleged rapist Samurailatpam Ananda Sharma of Tentha Awang Leikai, who is being accused of raping a nine-year-old on the guise of tutoring her.

Speaking to the media at its office in Thoubal Okram, AMSU Thoubal District Committee woman affairs secretary Puyam Malemnganbi said that such an obnoxious act of raping a nine-year-old is mortifying.

Saying that the accused should not be spared, she demanded capital punishment for the accused under the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Malemnganbi maintained that AMSU has been mounting pressure on the government to frame an ‘Anti-rape Law’ to check increasing sexual harassment and assault against women.

“Besides, we have been urging the authorities concerned to give special focus on the safety of women,” she said, adding that as a student body also, AMSU even set up its own women wing to carry out activities for the welfare of women.
