Woman delivers child near ATM booth in Imphal

It has been reported that the child died at the spot after birth.

A 35-year old woman with mental disabilities on Saturday night delivered a child at Wahengbam Leikai near an SBI ATM booth, in front of a closed shop amid the COVID-19 lockdown.

The woman hails from Khurai Angom Leikai and is admitted at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) septic ward. It has been reported that the child died at the spot after birth.

Hospital authorities told the media that the woman was brought by a team of city police station personnel and she was admitted at the hospital on Saturday at around 7.30 pm.

Speaking to Imphal Free Press, officer in charge, city police said the police team took the woman to the hospital on humanitarian grounds and the place of the incident was beyond the jurisdiction of the city police station.

Locals of Wahengbam Leikai informed the city police around 6 pm.

Wahengbam Leikai residents told IFP that the woman has been in the Khwairamband market area for some years now. A case has been registered at the concerned women police station for further investigation.
