Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Saturday said that lack of discipline among inmates and violation of safety guidelines inside quarantine centres are the main reasons for the spike in COVID-19 positive cases in the state.
The chief minister made the remark while inspecting the new COVID-19 Care Centre at UNACCO School, Meitram in Imphal West district on Saturday.
Speaking to media persons, Biren said that eight inmates, including the six inmates involved in S Kula Womens’ College case, had already been jailed for violating protocols and guidelines of government. Inmates who violate quarantine rules would be put behind bars, the CM added.
Biren further said that around 48 patients are being treated at the new COVID Care Centre, which started functioning from Friday.
“The government is considering to increase the number of beds from 100 to 300. Necessary manpower has been deputed at the centre for proper care and treatment of patients,” Biren said.
Meanwhile, the CM said that no new COVID-19 patients would be admitted in RIMS.
"RIMS will be kept as a general hospital while COVID-19 cases would be treated only in JNIMS, COVID Care Centre, Meitram and some district hospitals, Biren added.
The chief minister also lauded MLAs, CSOs and student bodies for their active participation in imparting awareness to the inmates of quarantine centres.
