Following the reports of new COVID strain in the UK in December, the Central government ordered the suspension of all flights between India and the UK.

The Delhi government also started a door-to-door medical check-up of people who had arrived from the United Kingdom earlier. It also traced persons who came in contact with them in the city.

According to reports, at least 68 people, including those who returned from the UK and their contacts, were found infected with the coronavirus during the exercise. All were sent to a separate isolation unit at the LNJP Hospital, sources said.

The sources said that no new cases were detected on Saturday but on Friday 14 residents of the national capital were found infected with the mutant variant of COVID-19. Three more people, who had tested positive for the virus earlier but whose genome sequencing reports were awaited, have now been found to be infected with the new strain.

Meanwhile, Delhi recorded 519 fresh COVID-19 cases on Saturday, pushing the confirmed tally in the city to 6.29 lakh. The COVID death toll mounted to 10,666.
