Massive fire and smouldering smoke engulfed the damaged Baghjan oil well of the Oil India Ltd in Assam’s Tinsukia district on Tuesday, according to reports.
No casualty or injury has been reported so far, the company said while firefighters have been rushed to the spot and efforts are underway to douse the flame.
While the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, Chief Minister's Office said in a tweet that Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has been informed over the phone by Chif Minister Sarbananda Sonowal regarding the incident.
"The CM has already directed to deploy fire & emergency services, army and police officials at the site to control the situation. The CM also directed district admin to ensure safety of people and appealed to local people to not panic," it said in a series of tweet.
Thousands of people living near the site have been evacuated by the district administration as the Baghjan oil well, next to the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park, has been spewing gas uncontrollably for the last 14 days.
Three experts from Singaporean firm Alert Disaster Control were at the blowout site and some equipment was being removed when the fire broke out in the afternoon, according to reports.
