Mizoram MP K Vanlalvena urges Centre to raise Mizo Regiment in Indian Army
The MP said raising a Mizo regiment or Mizoram Rifles will be in the interest of national security as Mizoram is located in the international boundary.
Mizoram Rajya Sabha MP K Vanlalvena has urged the Centre to raise a Mizo regiment in the Indian Army under the Union Defence ministry, an official statement said.
The MP on Thursday called on Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and urged the latter to raise a Mizo regiment under the Defence Ministry or Mizoram Rifles under the Union Home Ministry.
Vanlalvena told Singh that raising a Mizo regiment or Mizoram Rifles will be in the interest of national security as Mizoram is located in the international boundary.
"Such an initiative will also ease the unemployment problem in the state," the MP said.
It can be mentioned here that Mizoram shares a 404-km international border with Myanmar and a 318-km border with Bangladesh.
The Mizoram-Myanmar border is guarded by Assam Rifles while the Mizoram-Bangladesh border by the Border Security Forces (BSF).
Mizoram is also located in a vulnerable point when it comes to the issue of drugs. Heroin is often smuggled into the state from Myanmar.
