Returnees defecate in open as toilets at quarantine centre remains non-functional

Few of the returnees who received their food in plastic packages stated that they were served food only in the evening and they were not sufficient for all the returnees.

Around 210 returnees, including women and young children, currently under quarantine at Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Makhan village expressed dissatisfaction with non-functional toilets and untimely distribution of food.

The returnees from Gurgaon who reached the centre on May 29 informed the Imphal Free Press that they have started open defecation in the nearby areas since the toilets are not functional anymore.

One of the returnees informed that many of them have started considering leaving the centre and opting for home quarantine if the state government cannot provide them proper care and cater to their needs at the earliest.

He informed that they are not served their daily meals in time and the toilets of the centre are clogged and they cannot be utilised. Till the time of filing this report, it was learnt from the returnees that many of them did not get food since morning though it was already past 3 pm.

They are also asked to clean their wastes scattered in the area but they are not provided any hand gloves or masks, said the returnee.

The deputy commissioner and sub divisional officer of the district has visited the centre to provide necessary help. However, there is no further step taken up till date beside some help from local clubs and student organisations, he added.
