The ‘Mayanglang Phijoy Nupilup Union of Khwairamband Keithel’ on Saturday urged the state government to take necessary steps for reopening of the Khwairamband market.

Speaking at a press meet at Uripok, secretary of Mayanglang Phijoy Nupilup Union Yumnam Ibeyaima said that women vendors of Khwairamband Keithel are facing hardships and financial shortages due to the lockdown.

To combat the present crisis of coronavirus pandemic, the government is taking up different measures, she said.

“We know what situation the state government is in while handling such crisis."

But the lockdown started from March 25 and all markets have remained closed ever since, she said. Those who earn their livelihood from vending at the markets are facing extreme financial crisis due to the lockdown. “How their families will survive without earning for months?" she questioned.

COVID-19 patients are increasing day by day, she further said while adding those tested positive are mostly returnees.

The government has opened quarantine centres for them and their treatment is going on in special wards, she said.

Therefore, the Union urges the state government to allow reopening of market as the vendors have no other means of livelihood and are going through untold miseries, she added.
