In an effort to give education in South Garo Hills a major boost, a sanction of Rs 12 crores was made to the Capt Williamson A Sangma Government College of Baghmara for the development of a new building on Thursday.

This is expected to be a huge fillip to the district which has struggled with educational infrastructure for decades.

The sanction for the development of the college building was announced today by the MLA from Rongara-Siju, Rakkam Sangma, who had earlier met Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma on this issue.

“This will help boost the education sector in South Garo Hills and is in line with the vision of the Chief Minister to make all districts self sufficient in education. South Garo Hills has been neglected through decades by the powers that be and this has pushed us back by decades,” said the MLA.

He also expressed his gratitude to the chhief minister by saying that the push for better education in the State will definitely bear fruit in the future.

“We want all districts to have all branches of education (Science, Arts and Commerce) and we are moving forward with that vision,” added.

South Garo Hills does not have enough of science education centres leading to most students either having to move out of the district or having to choose either Commerce or Arts to continue further studies.

“Currently the sanction is for a new building for the college. The sanction will be given in a few weeks and hopefully work can start fast as well. We really need to fast track development for the people of South Garo Hills,” added Rakkam.
