The Agriculture Department of Meghalaya has provided seeds at 75 per cent subsidised rates to farmers of the state amid the induced lockdown to contain the spread of COVID-19.
Director of Agriculture B Syiem recently said that this was done besides the normal scheme of distribution of seeds.
“Apart from the normal scheme both the Horticulture and Agriculture departments have also increased the distribution of seeds of rice and vegetables to the farmers and are also providing seeds at 75 per cent subsidized rates to the farmers,” he further said.
Informing that the Agriculture department has also opened up various agricultural inputs shops to help the farmers, he said, “We have also told the suppliers to directly be in contact with the district officers of the department and any farmers who need the various seeds have to contact the district officers of the Agriculture and the Horticulture department available in every district.”
He then said the district officers of the department also ensure that only the genuine farmers avail the assistance.
Syiem said that the department is encouraging organic farming and has stopped the use of chemical fertilizers for two years now.
