Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Monday inaugurated Flybig’s flight from Imphal to Tezu in Arunachal Pradesh at the Bir Tikendrajit International Airport in Imphal.
Flybig's maiden flight from Tezu to Imphal Airport was welcomed with a water cannon salute and a cultural show.
Speaking to the media after the flagging off ceremony, CM Biren said that under the ambitious UDAN scheme initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Manipur will now have direct air connectivity to Arunachal Pradesh.
Such initiative will not only shorten the connection among the people of Northeast but also boost the trading and tourism sectors, the CM said.
Announcing that Imphal to Bangkok flight services via Guwahati will be operational soon, he however, informed that the direct flight from Imphal to Bangkok is still under consideration.
After observing and studying the number of passengers for Bangkok from the state, the direct flight to Bangkok will also be initiated at the earliest possible, he added.
Flybig CMD Sanjay Mandavia said that the company is honoured and blessed to start their operations in Imphal, the cultural capital of Manipur. In the coming days, Flybig is planning to connect Imphal to Silchar and Kolkata with direct connections, he added.
As per officials, the Flybig will operate Guwahati-Tezu-Imphal-Tezu-Guwahati flights on all days except Monday on its ATR aircraft.
The function was also attended by minister of Transport Kashim Vashum; Works minister Govindas Konthoujam; BJP Manipur president A Sarda among others.
