President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday visited Kohima War Cemetery and paid homage to the bravehearts who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty during World War II on the second day of her maiden visit to Nagaland.
"President Droupadi Murmu visited Kohima War Cemetery and laid wreath to the fallen heroes. The President paid homage to the bravehearts who made supreme sacrifice in the line of duty in and around Kohima during World War II," the Rashtrapati Bhavan tweeted.
Later, the President also visited Kigwema, a traditional village of Nagaland, and interacted with the village council members and members of the self help groups.
On Wednesday, the President attended the civic reception hosted in her honour by the Nagaland government and virtually inaugurated/laid the foundation stone for various projects related to education, road infrastructure and financial sector at Kohima, the President of India said in statement.
Speaking on the occasion, the President said that the ‘Act East Policy’ of the Government of India focuses on the overall development of the North Eastern Region. She expressed confidence that roads and bridges under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana which were inaugurated on Wednesday will give a new boost to the connectivity in the region.
The President noted that the literacy rate among women in the state is higher than the national average and Nagaland is the safest place for women in the country. She said that this demonstrates the high respect given to the women in the Naga society. She urged women of Nagaland to come forward and get more involved in public life.
President Murmu is scheduled to grace the 17th convocation of the Mizoram University at Aizawl and inaugurate various education related projects in the state of Mizoram on Thursday. In the evening, she will also attend the civic reception to be hosted by the Government of Mizoram in her honour at the Raj Bhavan, Aizawl.
On Friday, the President will address the members of the Mizoram Legislative Assembly at Aizawl. On the same day, she will attend a civic reception to be hosted by the Government of Sikkim in her honour and inaugurate/lay the foundation stones for the various projects of Central and state governments, according to the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
