Kangpokpi AC MLA Nemcha Kipgen on Sunday urged women farmers in Kangpokpi to stop the culture and practice of cultivating poppy in the area as it will only lead the society to hell. She exhorted them to fight the war on drugs for a better society.
Kipgen was speaking at the observation of the 82nd Nupilan Memorial Day at Kangpokpi District Headquarters.
Held at Nute Kailhang at Kangpokpi Town, a large number of women, CSO leaders, Lhingneikim, ZEO Kangpokpi; Tingnei Lhouvum, President BJP Kangpokpi Mandal and Hekim Hangshing, President, Kangpokpi Women Welfare Organization, attended the event.
Addressing the gathering, MLA Nemcha Kipgen while highlighting the brief history of observing the great Nupilan Memorial Day stating that that December 12 marks the day when thousands of women in unison stood up and protested for the rights of their countrymen and women against the injustice of forced labour by the British in 1939.
She recalled that the first agitation or women’s war (Nupilan) was triggered by the action of Colonel Maxwell in July 1904 to reintroduce the abolished Lallup System, wherein men were required to perform free labour for 10 days after every 30 days.
There have been many women-led movements across the country, but Nupilan remains a strong testament to the power of women’s voice in India, asserted the MLA.
The MLA urged the women of Kangpokpi to stop the culture and practice of cultivating poppy in the area as it will only lead the society into hell while exhorting them to fight the war on drugs for a better society.
MLA Nemcha Kipgen also handed over 28 Old Age Pension Cards and 50 health cards including CMHT and PMJAY to the beneficiaries on the occasion.
