The World Meetei Council has expressed deep concerns about a press release issued by UN Special Rapporteurs regarding the Manipur crisis on September 4, 2023, titled “India: UN experts alarmed by continuing abuses in Manipur”.

The UN press release lacks balance and impartiality, potentially perpetuating a divisive narrative, Yambem Arun Meetei, secretary general, CEC - World Meetei Council said in a release on Thursday.

To deal with the issue, the WMC had launched a worldwide signature campaign on Wednesday (October 25) at 7.30 pm IST joined by our brothers and sisters from America, Asia, Australia, Europe and India, the council said.

The council also appealed to the Meiteis around the world to sign “An Appeal to Review and Rectify UN PR on Manipur issue to Ensure Impartiality and Inclusivity” via the link https://chng.it/T6bgrDD7DT so that UN should take the necessary recourse.

The WMC stated that it has disputed several points mentioned on the UN press release, including the portrayal of the conflict as religious, gender based, incited by hate speech and Kuki community as ethnic minority and the victim in its submission to the United Nations.

It addresses the real complex dynamics of the conflict and the fact that Meetei is the indigenous and endangered community in India, the grave consequences of committing ethnic cleansing of Meeteis in Kuki dominated districts on 3rd of May, 2023, the WMC stated.

WMC’s submission exposes the primary cause of the issue as alleged illicit plans, actions, and aggression associated with ChinKuki terrorist groups, their political leaders and militant factions operating under Suspension of Operations (SoO), all motivated by one common deadly dream of a separate nation “Zalengam or Zoland”, the council said.

The World Meetei Council requests a re-evaluation and revision of the UN press release to ensure a more balanced and comprehensive understanding of the issue. We emphasize the importance of the United Nations’ credibility as a neutral and objective international organization, it said.
