The United Committee Manipur (UCM) on Friday drew the attention of the state government for installing symbolic structures and uniqueness with regard to the war heroes of Manipur at Mt Manipur in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Speaking to the media at the office of UCM in Imphal West, its president Joychandra Konthoujam informed that a team of the committee had visited the site of Mount Manipur along with some media fraternities recently for paying tribute to the 23 exiled freedom fighters.
He said that though the people of Manipur are proud of the news of renaming Mt Harriet as Mt Manipur by the Central government, it is unfortunate that no significant memories relating to the war-deported heroes are witnessed at the site.
It is contradictory to the hopes of the people of Manipur that a new unique vision will be there under its implementation shortly, he added.
In this regard, UCM delegates submitted a memorandum containing five charters of demands to Chief Minister N Biren on Friday at his secretariat.
The demands included construction of a rest house or guest house in the area of Mt Manipur for the visitors or descendants of freedom fighters coming from Manipur and her neighbouring states.
It also demanded erection of a life-sized statue of Maharaj Kulachandra and installation of a Common Memorial Tower enshrining all 23 deported freedom fighters; changing the present signboard mentioning "Manipur Parvat National Park" into "Mt Manipur National Park".
The UCM also demanded to make available the brief history, leaflets, catalogues, pictorial postcards and relevant documents depicting reflecting all the 23 deported freedom fighters of Manipur displayed at the place to draw the attention and interest of tourists and visitors.
The UCM president informed that the chief minister had personally given assurance to the delegates to convert their charter of demands into action.
During the visit at the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the team had also planted saplings of Yongchak, Tairen and Heirangoi which are considered as indigenous plants of Manipur, informed Joychandra.
He further informed that copies of the memorandum have also been forwarded to the Union Home minister and the MP (Lok Sabha) of Andaman and Nicobar.
