Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey on Thursday said that while restoring peace is a priority in the state, the government has already taken steps to identify illegal immigrants in the state.
She was responding to Ng Nongyai, former Member, Manipur Human Rights Commission and four others who called on her at the Raj Bhavan on Thursday.
According to a release from the Governor's Secretariat, Raj Bhavan, the team apprised the governor of the prevailing demographic imbalance in the state and submitted a memorandum to the Governor requesting to implement NRC at the earliest so that foreigners/outsiders can be identified and repatriated to their places.
While informing the Governor about the population imbalance, the team said, to check abnormal population growth among the communities, Population Policy has to be formulated and this is the only way out to check the imbalance, the Raj Bhavan said. The team also said that the present day situation in Manipur is because of those illegal immigrants who had landed in the state and therefore steps for a permanent solution to the ongoing impasse should be taken up.
The Governor, while assuring the team for a permanent solution to the unrest, said the priority area which all should work together is the restoration of complete peace and normalcy in the state.
She also said that the government has already taken up steps to identify illegal immigrants and once the present crisis is solved, steps to implement different policies would be taken up, as per the Raj Bhavan.
Sunil Nagpal, State Head- Operations, HDFC Bank Ltd. along with Rajen Wahengbam also called on the Governor at the Raj Bhavan and highlighted various activities taken up by the Bank under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.
Sunil Nagpal informed the Governor about the annual blood donation drive taken up by the bank starting from 2007 and said, this year the bank achieved worldwide recognition, i.e. Guinness World records. The largest blood donation (multiple venues) involved 61,902 participants and was achieved by HDFC Bank limited (India) in 1,115 blood donation camps across 709 locations in India on 6th December, 2023, he added.
The Governor appreciated the initiative taken up by the bank and asked the banker to extend assistance to the violence hit Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) staying in different relief camps in the State. She asked them to initiate training programmes and to ease the process for loan recovery and delivery to the IDPs, the release said.
A delegation of All Manipur Muslims (Meitei Pangal) Welfare Association (AMPWA) led by Janab AR Khan, IAS (Retd.) along with Md Akhtar Hussain, Md Abdus Salam, Md Naziruddin and Md Salaoddin Khan called on Governor, Miss Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhavan this evening and donated a sum of Rs 50,000 to the Governor’s Relief Fund, the Raj Bhavan informed.
The delegation submitted a memorandum to the Governor urging to extend 4 per cent reservation of seats for admission in the non-professional (general) courses in higher education, setting up of Model schools, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya in Meitei Pangal dominated areas to improve quality education. They demand for special Livelihood Mission Projects and skill development programmes designed for providing employment to the community particularly the women workforce.
The delegation also requested the Governor for activation of National Minorities Development & Finance Corporation (NMDFC) and National Backward Classes Finance and Development Corporation (NBCFDC)’s programmes to the state. They also expressed their unhappiness over the unrest prevailing in the State following the clashes between the two communities and assured to extend all possible support and cooperation in the efforts to restore peace and harmony in the state.
The Governor, while welcoming their commitment to extend cooperation in the restoration of peace and harmony in the state, said that all communities, all stakeholders should come forward and join hands to cooperate with the government in the efforts to settle the unrest in the state.
Both the Centre and the state government are trying our best to resolve the crisis so that a peaceful and harmonious society can prevail for the years, the Governor said and appreciated the delegation for their support and assured to extend all possible help for the welfare of the community.
