As celebrated across the country, National Unity Day (Rashtriya Ekta Diwas) was also observed in Manipur on Thursday to mark the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who had a major role in the political integration of India.
“Rashtriya Ekta Diwas” 2024 (National Unity Day) was observed at the 1st Bn Manipur Rifles Parade Ground, Imphal.
Minister Th Biswajit revealed the significance of the day, as the day has been observed since 2014 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, an independent activist and statesman who served as the first deputy prime minister and home minister of Independent India from 1947 to 1950.
The minister remembered Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s dedication in unification of the nation, stating that as a pure Gandhian, Sadar took a major role in the Indian freedom movements.
“He revolted and evoked sympathy and admiration across India, including among pro-British Indian politicians. His remarkable contributions during Quit India Movement (1942), during the time of partition of India, his implorations to the youngsters to preserve and to promote patriotism in strengthening the unity and diversity of the nation were noteworthy”, Biswajit said.
The minister also highlighted the importance of observing Rashtriya Ekta Diwas stating that in remembrance of his significant contributions, the “Statue of Unity” was inaugurated on October 31, 2018, the 143rd anniversary of Patel’s birth.
Biswajit appealed to the general public to follow the footsteps of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel to preserve and maintain the tranquillity, unity and diversity of the state and the nation.
Minister Thongam Biswajit took salute from the parade contingents led by parade commander Sarangthem Hemanta Singh (MPS), CO 3rd IRB and inspected the parade contingents.
Parading of March Past by 15 contingents including the band contingents, and administering of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas pledge led by the minister were among the part of the function.
The celebration was also attended by ministers, MLAs, high level civil and police officials and the public.

Kangpokpi: The 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was marked with a spirited observance of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) in Kangpokpi, organized under the aegis of the District Administration. The commemoration included a “Run for Unity,” which aimed to foster a sense of national unity and communal harmony.
The run saw enthusiastic participation from District Police, led by SP Kangpokpi, Manoj Prabhakar, along with CRPF personnel, students, and local youths. District Administration officials also took part, showcasing a strong sense of solidarity and commitment to the nation’s unity.
Flagged off at the SP Office in Kangpokpi by N. Shokhongam Baite, MCS, ADC/ADM Kangpokpi, the run traversed the scenic route along NH-2, reaching Daili before returning to culminate at Brig. M. Thomas Ground. The event concluded with a solemn pledge for unity and dedication to the nation, taken by all participants at the ground.
Among the notable officials present were Lamminlal Simte, MCS, Assistant Commissioner/SDO Champhai, and James Doujapao Haokip, MCS, CEO of the Sadar Hills Autonomous District Council, alongside other dignitaries.
The event was a fitting tribute to Sardar Patel’s legacy, reinforcing the values of unity and integrity that he embodied, inspiring participants to uphold the spirit of togetherness across the diverse communities in Kangpokpi.

Churachandpur: As observed across the nation, the National Unity Day was also observed at the Mini Secretariats Complex, Tuibong in Churachandpur on Thursday.
As part of the observation, a unity run was flagged off by the SP of Churachandpur, Shaik Mohammad Zaib Zakir in the presence of Add DC of Churachandpur, Thangboi Gangte and the Commander of IRB, CRPF and BSF.
Organised by the district administration, jawans or personnel from BSF, CRPF, Indian Reserve Battalion ran from the Mini Secretariat, Tuibong till Hiangtam Lamka public Ground.
Prior to the run, the SP of Churachandpur and other participants read out the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas pledge which was a pledge for the unity, integrity and security of the nation and a promise to strive hard to spread the message among all Indians which was the vision of Sardar Vallabhabhai Patel.
Tamenglong: Deputy Commissioner Tamenglong L Angshim Dangshawa flagged off the ‘Run for Unity’ Event in Tamenglong district headquarter at Jadonang park on Thursday.
The ‘Run for Unity’ which started from Jadonang park culminated at 5th MR, BN headquarters, Khongjaron, Tamenglong.
Joshua Kamei of Kakhulong village, Langdimei Daimei of Indai Village and Nambilung Gangmei of 5th MR battalion finished the run event as first, second and third respectively.
District level officials, CSO, local youths and women’s society of various wards of Tamenglong district took part at the event with vigor and enthusiasm.
The ‘Run for Unity’ was first initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015 to honor the legacy of Sardar Patel, who played a pivotal role in uniting over 550 princely states into modern-day India post-independence.

Manipur University: The National Unity Day (Rashtriya Ekta Diwas) which marks the birthday anniversary of India’s first home minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was observed at Manipur University, Imphal on Thursday.
The observation was organised by National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell, FICC and FIC, Manipur University under the theme ‘Unity And Integrity’.
Speaking on the occasion, State Nodal officer of NSS cum director of Youth Affairs and Sports T Phulen Meitei highlighted that day was observed to honour the contributions of Sardar Patel in building a diversely united nation.
“We need to revitalise the principles of unity during these trying times and safeguard the ideals of oneness,” he said.
Meanwhile, VC of Manipur University professor N Lokendro highlighted the contributions of Sardar Patel in uniting the various regions of India and enacting a forming a united nation.
On the other hand, chairman of FICC and FIC cum dean of Students’ Welfare, MU professor M Premjit appealed to all the people to initiate such ideals of unity from home and promote the principles of indigeneity.
The awards for the painting competition which was organised on October 30 was also distributed during the event.
NSS Program coordinator, MU Laishram Santosh among others were present during the programme.
