In an observation of International Day of Sign Language, Manipur Social Welfare Minister H Dingo said that a plan has been conceptualised to introduce a sign language news programme on local news channels to ensure accessibility for the deaf and mute community.
Minister informed while attending the observation by All Manipur Association of Deaf and Mute observed the International Day of Sign Language, on Monday at Manipur Press Club.
The minister said that the department is also working on developing an application in collaboration with NIELIT within this year to enhance communication for the deaf and mute community.
“No one is perfect, and challenges are part of life”, said the minister expressing hope that people from the disabled, deaf, and mute communities will continue to contribute to society with determination.
He also highlighted that this event has provided an opportunity to raise awareness about the struggles and needs of those with speech and hearing impairments.
Minister Dingo also pledged that the Social Welfare Department would work to further strengthen support systems for the deaf and mute community.
The event was attended by Social Welfare department deputy director L Dhaneshwor; social activist Rohan Philem, and many others.
International Day of Sign Language 2024 observed in Churachandpur: International Day of Sign Language 2024 was observed on Monday at Churachandpur Autonomous College, Hiangtam Lamka. It was jointly organised by Center for Community Initiative and the Churachandpur Autonomous College where more than 250 students were in attendance.
The occasion was hosted by Assistant Professor Lun Kim where Associate professor Lily Tombing gave the welcome speech and Associate professor Pauchungnung Vaiphei delivered the keynote address. The Malsawm Initiative administrators, Ms Hoikim and TMI students participated with Ms Parnei Vaiphei acting as sign language interpreter.
The occasion witnessed an interaction programme with the student and teaching staff of TMI under CCI who are mostly Hearing Impaired (HI) with students and faculty members of Churachandpur Autonomous College where CCI staff lectured about the reason for the observation of International Day of Sign Languages through Lips reading and gesture.
The occasion also witnessed TMI students demonstrating, teaching the technique of American and Indian Sign Language Alphabets and how to sing Indian National Anthem to the students of Churachandpur Autonomous College, which was the first experience for many students on Sign Language of the College.
