Manipur Unrest: Cops escape kidnap attempt by armed miscreants in Moreh

Moreh police appealed to the concerned authorities to deploy additional forces as the place is becoming more vulnerable, even for the state police.

Armed miscreants reportedly attempted to kidnap two Manipur police commando personnel on Wednesday morning near Moreh Gate No 2 in Tengnoupal district. The incident took place around 9 am, about 60 metres away from the Moreh Police Station, sources said.

According to the police in Moreh, the police said some armed miscreants, suspected to be KNA and UKLF, came in an auto rickshaw and shouted at the two cops, Bulu and Robinson, who were in civil dress, to stop.

The two cops, while trying to escape from the spot, were blocked by another auto rickshaw that hit Bulu. The armed miscreants started firing with an intention to kidnap the two ,cops who were in civil dress, the police added.

The police further said that Robinson ran towards the police station and reported the incident and when the Moreh police initiated the rescue, Bulu narrowly escaped from the armed miscreants.

Meanwhile, the Police Control Room said in a statement that some suspected armed miscreants travelling in an auto tried to abduct two police personnel in plain clothes, who were going to purchase some essential items, including medicine from Moreh Gate number 2 and Nepali Basti diversion point.

After a brief scuffle, the personnel escaped to Moreh Police Station, the Police said, adding that the suspected armed miscreants also escaped from the area after firing 2/3 rounds in the air.

District Police Tengnoupal and Central force conducted a search operation in the area. However, the armed miscreants fled from the area swiftly. No casualty is reported in the incident, police said.

Even when the BSF and Assam Rrifles are deployed in Moreh town, an armed miscreant attacking police commando near the police station shows that the armed militants are observing the security forces, the police alleged and questioned why the central forces were not conducting any frisking and checking.

Meanwhile, the Police Control Room informed that about 126 Nakas/ Checkpoints were installed in different Districts of Manipur, both in the hill and the valley and Police has detained 447 persons in connection with violations in different districts of the State.

Movement of essential items is ensured along NH37 and NH2 with strict security measures taken up in all vulnerable locations above providing security convoy in sensitive stretches to ensure free and safe movement of vehicles, it added.

An appeal is made to the general public to extend all possible help in bringing normalcy in the state, to clarify any rumour by dialling rumour free number - 9233522822 of Central Control room, and to return and deposit arms, ammunition and explosives to the police or security forces immediately, the police said.
