Three minors and the driver lost their lives when the van they were traveling in fell into a gorge in Ukhrul district on Sunday afternoon. Two other minors were also injured in the accident.
A team of Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR), led by its chairperson Keisam Pradipkumar, visited JNIMS on Monday to assess the health condition of two children namely Chihangam Chahongnao (11), son of Leishipem Chahongnao and Sokhanwung Wangwa (11), son of Y Solem of L Phungthar village, PS Somdal, Ukhrul district, who are being treated at the hospital.
The incident occurred between Maichon and L Phungthar (Lamyim Phungthar) villages under LM Block.
The vehicle plunged into a gorge while navigating a narrow road and fell into a nearby river.
The deceased have been identified as Ningyo Raikhan (38), Yarsing Lungleng (10), Ngacheingam Lungleng (12), both sons of Katuishang Lungleng of L Phungthar, and Wortha Kashung (8), son of Shimphungrim village.
Of those injured, Chihangam (13) sustained head injuries and a broken leg but is reported to be out of danger but Sokhanwung Yangya (11) is in a critical condition. Both were initially brought to Ukhrul and later admitted to JNIMS in Imphal.
MCPCR urged the Superintendent of JNIMS to provide all possible help to the two children who are struggling for their lives.
MCPCR also told the Superintendent to set up a child friendly space in hospital premises where the patient party’s children could take rest and lactating mothers could breastfeed their babies during their stay in the hospital.
Considering the nature and cause of the Ukhrul accident, the MCPCR has strongly recommended declaring the accident to be a “Disaster” as it was caused by the thick foggy condition resulting in sudden invisibility.
Members of MCPCR Habibur Rahman and Ch Anita also accompanied the visit.
