With the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha scheduled to be held from Monday, different pressure groups of the state have come alive, organising rallies and protests, especially with reports that a mass operation could be conducted in Manipur
On Sunday, rallies and protests were held at different parts of the state to draw the attention of the concerned authorities amid reports of the central government resolving to disarm the state forces in the process.
In Imphal, a sit-in-protest was held at Thangmeiband DM College gate even as a large number of women protesters marched towards CM Bunglow from Lilong Chaging area.
The sloganeering women were stopped by Police at Canchipur in front of Manipur University Gate. The Police informed the protesters that the rally had to be halted here however, some chosen representatives may be allowed to go forward and submit their memorandum to the concerned authorities.
A heated exchange between the protestors and the police took place wherein a lady Police officer allegedly made some derogatory remarks which turned the peaceful rally into a virulent exchange of words between the two sides.
The protestors, demanding apology from the lady Police officer who refused to back down for a longtime.
Talking to the media, Sujata Devi said that as the Parliament session is approaching they wanted to draw the attention of the central government. Commenting on the deployment of additional forces in the state, Sujata Devi said the central para military forces should be deployed at far flung and vulnerable areas instead of being deployed mainly in valley areas.
On the other hand, popular woman leader Ema Nganbi said the conditions in Manipur needed attention from the central government, as the people in the state feel threatened by the reports of planned mass combing operations and the possible excessive use of muscle power that could lead to human rights violations, etc. She said the people in the state are already suffering and so, an excessive use of power by security agencies is not needed at the moment.
Mentioned may be made that RSS chief Mohan Rao Bhagwat recently remarked that the crisis in Manipur needs solution on urgent basis.
Furthermore, after the Union Home Ministry conducted a high level security meet at Delhi, CM Biren said the third Modi term considered resolving the crisis in the state as the top priority.
While Kuki based ITLF is organising a total shutdown and rally at Churachandpur on 24 June, many civil society organisations are planning for many major protests in the valley districts to draw the attention of the central government.
