The Manipur government on Monday issued flood advisory for Imphal West, Imphal East district as major rivers running in the greater Imphal areas have touched warning levels.
District Magistrate, Imphal West district Th Kirankumar issued a flood advisory, stating that the major rivers in the district have touched the ‘Warning Level’ in Imphal area and about to touch the ‘Flood Level’ as on the evening of Monday.
Considering the above facts, the public in general and the people located in the river fronts, river banks or close to the river course are requested to stay alert for any possible breach of the river banks or embankments or overflows, stated the advisory signed by the District Magistrate, Imphal West district Th Kirankumar.
It requested the public to remain vigilant and inform any Government authority (including DC Office or Police Stations or Water Resource Department or any other Office) at short notice for immediate intervention of the Government so that life and property can be protected.
The catchment areas of the major rivers like Imphal River and Nambul River are reported to be receiving continuous rainfall, it mentioned.
The India Meteorological department vide its Special Weather Bulletin 06 dated July 1 has forecast ‘Heavy to Very Heavy rainfall activity’ over Manipur for next 5 days, it added.
Meanwhile, the general public of Imphal East district is also advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions to avoid the loss of life and property.
The advisory issued by deputy commissioner, Imphal East district Khumanthem Diana Devi mentioned the cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam and its neighbouring areas at 0.9 km above mean sea level. Additionally, a trough runs from west Assam to north Odisha between 3.1 and 3.6 km above mean sea level, it stated.
It advised the general public remain alert for any possible breach of river banks/overflooding in any area. It advised to stay Informed, keep oneself updated with the latest weather forecasts and warnings issued by local, state and national authorities.
It stressed on the need to ignore rumours and stay calm and not to panic.
It stated to keep emergency contacts handy and inform Government authorities (including DC Office or Police Stations or Water Resources Department or any Government authority) for immediate intervention to prevent loss of life and property.
One should prepare emergency kit with essential Items such as non-perishable foods, water, torchlights, first aid supplies, medicines, etc. for safety and survival, it added.
“Children and elderlies are advised to stay in safe locations. Stay away from vulnerable structures, unattached metal sheets, banana trees, papaya trees etc. Agriculture and other related activities may be postponed till the weather condition improves,” it mentioned
It advised to avoid going to areas that face water logging problems often.
