The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has vehemently opposed Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma's statement for unification of Kuki-Zo under a single leadership.
During a press conference at the Congress Bhawan on Wednesday, MPCC chief spokesperson Hareshwar Goswami vehemently opposed the controversial statement made by Mizoram CM recently, accusing the CM of undermining the unity and integrity of both India and Manipur while addressing a Kuki diaspora gathering in United States on September 4, 2024.
The CM Lalduhoma reportedly declared his support for uniting Kuki people under a single leadership and nationhood, even if it meant transcending the existing border between India, Myanmar and Bangladesh, Hareshwar highlighted.
Lalduhoma also described the Kuki as “one people - brothers and sisters - unjustly divided under three different governments,” a sentiment that has sparked concerns about the intentions behind such statements.
The statement was even endorsed by the department of Information and Public Relation of Mizoram by lending weight of an official stance, he said.
Hareshwar condemned the statement as unfortunate and claimed that it mirrors last remarks from Bangladesh ex-PM Sheikh Hasina, who allegedly spoke of creating a separate, Christian majority nation for Kuki people.
“The CM’s statement goes against everything we stand for as a united country under a parliamentary democracy”, said Hareshwar, adding that it is a clear attempt to stir divisive sentiments.
He questions why BJP government both in centre and state has no response against such declaration of CM Lalduhoma.
Expressing suspicious Hareshwar asked ‘Is this a deliberate attempt to further divide people in the valley’.
According to Hareshwar, Congress party stands commitment to upholding India’s unity and parliamentary democracy, and he alarmed threat to national integrity.
He called on the government to address on the matter, without staying silent.
Hareshwar expressed urgency of a united front against such divisive rhetoric that could jeopardize the social fabric of the state.
