Lakshman Prasad Acharya sworn in as 19th Governor of Manipur

Acharya succeeds Anusuiya Uikey, who was Manipur’s Governor from February 2023.

Lakshman Prasad Acharya was on Wednesday sworn-in as the 19th governor of Manipur at a ceremony held at the Durbar Hall of Raj Bhavan, Imphal in the presence of Chief Minister N Biren Singh, council of ministers, high ranking officials and prominent figures.

Acharya succeeds Anusuiya Uikey, who was Manipur’s Governor from February 2023. 

The oath of office and secrecy was administered by chief justice of the Manipur High Court Justice Siddharth Mridul.

The appointment letter of Lakshman Prasad Acharya as the governor of Manipur given by the President of India Draupadi Murmu was read out by Manipur chief secretary Vineet Joshi during the oath-taking ceremony.

After the oath-taking ceremony, the new governor received the Rashtriya Salute and inspected the guard of honour by the personnel of MR and IRB inside the Raj Bhawan and also interacted with the chief minister along with his cabinet colleagues and other officials.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the ceremony, Lakshman Prasad Acharya expressed his joy at being in the midst of the people of Manipur and commended the natural and cultural beauty of the state. 

He conveyed his hopes for the swift restoration of peace and called upon the people to unite, cooperate, and work together for the prosperity of Manipur.

Lakshman Prasad Acharya arrived in the state on Tuesday following his appointment as the Governor of Manipur in additional charge as the governor of Assam, to which he took the oath on Tuesday.

He is a politician, who had served as the governor of Sikkim from 2023 to 2024. Being affiliated to the BJP, he was a deputy leader and member of the House in the UP Legislative Council from 2015 to 2023.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh who witnessed the oath taking ceremony told the media that with the coming of the new governor, people are happy and it is hopeful that peace will be restored in Manipur at the earliest.

When questioned about the 10 Kuki Zo MLAs who refused to turn up at the Assembly session which started today, CM Biren replied, "I came to know that some colleagues are taking leave officially, so we have to accept it."

When questioned about the outcome of his recent journey to the national capital and the meeting with PM Modi, he replied, "Only for peace."

Regarding the Union Budget, he said it is one of the most impressive budgets which focus on infrastructure development, youth welfare and women empowerment and others.

The chief minister, while stressing the need of unity to restore peace, urged all concerned to stop playing issue-based politics.
