National Democratic Alliance (NDA)’s presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu visited Imphal and conducted a meeting with BJP MLAs and ministers at Hotel Imphal on Tuesday.
Murmu arrived at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport on a special flight at around 7 pm as it was reportedly delayed for over an hour from the original schedule.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh, state BJP president A Sharda Devi and other members of state BJP came to receive Murmu at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport where she was received with bouquets from the members of BJP Schedule Tribe Morcha.
She declined from answering any of the queries from the media at the airport. However, the chief minister said that her visit to Imphal is related to the upcoming election for the President of India. The state BJP strongly believes that she will become the next President of India, he added.
During a programme conducted at Sangai hall, Hotel Imphal, state BJP president A Sharda Devi said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been taking various welfare measures to empower women including scheduled tribe and caste people of the country.
For empowering women, and people of scheduled tribes and castes, the NDA government has decided to field Droupadi Murmu as the presidential candidate, she added.
Later, a closed door meeting was conducted with Murmu, the state chief minister, state BJP MLAs and ministers including other party leaders at Sangai Hall, Hotel Imphal.
It is learnt that she will leave in the same flight late Tuesday from Imphal.
