An illegal immigrant from Bangladesh was re-arrested in Manipur during an Inner Line Permit (ILP) verification drive of non-locals conducted by a team of Lilong police near Lilong Keithel in Thoubal district on Wednesday.
DIG Range (II) Wrongam Ningsen said during a press meet held at Lilong police station that based on a tipoff about the presence of a suspected Bangladeshi near Lilong Keithel, a team of Lilong police rushed to the area and conducted an ILP verification drive.
During the drive, the team detained one individual suspected to be an illegal immigrant, from a scrap dealer shop, he said.
The detained individual was identified as one Mohammad Ramjan Ali, 35, son of Md Jalaluddin from Piyali Mari, PO-Monakasha, PS-Shibganj, Chapainawabganj district of Bangladesh. He was detained at Lilong Keithel by the Lilong police team, he added.
On further examination, it was revealed that Mohammad Ramjan Ali was arrested on April 19, 2021 for possessing an invalid passport VISA bearing no. AE4087924 with date of expiry as November 18, 2017. He was sent to judicial custody on April 26, 2021, and was released by the court of JMFC, Thoubal on February 10, 2022.
DIG Ningsen maintained that the illegal immigrant has been arrested and detained at NCO Barrack at third IRB Complex in Thoubal district awaiting further legal actions, including deportation.
The NCO Barrack at third IRB Complex, Thoubal district has been declared as detention centre of illegal immigrants by the state government in an order on October 20, 2022.
The police official also mentioned that another illegal Bangladeshi immigrant was also arrested from Khabeisoi in Imphal East district on October 7. He appealed to the people of the state not to entertain any illegal immigrants and to inform the police if they have information about the presence of illegal immigrants.
