Manipur Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh has expressed deep concern over declining fertility rate in the state and called upon all health professionals to bring feasible suggestions and measures.

The Health minister was addressing the silver jubilee conference of Association of Surgeons of India Manipur State Chapter (ASIMANICON) 2022 held at the Jubilee Hall of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Saturday.

Addressing the function as chief guest, Ranjan said that Manipur has human resources to bring progress in the state as majority of the population are youth. In view of it, the state government is putting effort for the betterment of this group, he said.

However, the opportunity will shrink completely after 20-30 years as the fertility rate of the state is declining, he said.

To prevent this scenario, it is high time to figure out how to address the problems, he added.

The minister further said that there will be tremendous change in the state once the Act East Policy is fully implemented. As an outcome of the policy, Manipur would become India's gateway to the South East Asian Countries that will boost the economy of the state, he added.

While appreciating RIMS, he said that the institute has brought so many developmental changes in the last few years. Besides this, the attitudinal behaviour of staff towards patients has improved - treating patients with human touch.

The cleanliness maintained within the premises of the institute is highly commendable, he added.

The programme was also attended by chairman of Association of Surgeons of India (ASI), Manipur State Chapter, Dr Nepram Sanjib Singh; president of ASI Headquarters, Dr G Siddesh; director of RIMS, Dr Ahanthem Santa Singh and president of Association of Minimal Access Surgeons of India (AMASI), Dr Jugindro Sorokhaibam as president and guests of honour respectively.
